We are BREast Baton Rouge Parish is a diverse community made up of people from various races, ethnicities, abilities, and gender identities.
However, not all residents have equitable access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities.
On June 12, Mayor Sharon Weston Broome established a Commission on Racial Equity and Inclusion (COREI) that will work to instill the practice of racial equity and inclusion throughout city-parish government and the community.
“We are at crossroads in our nation’s history, and we have the potential to transform this moment into a movement, one where we can bring our goal of justice to fruition,” she said.
The commission will focus on four areas:
o Community and Economic Development o Education, Health and Human Services o Arts, Culture & Community Based Nonprofits o Government Entities The commission will convene dialogues with public and private sector leaders, as well as with community members from across the city-parish, in order to better understand, directly challenge and fundamentally transform inequitable institutions, policies and culture.
Now is a time for reflection and action.
